UniSource is making it easier for customers to get answers, bill assistance and support at convenient pop-up events in our communities.

The new Neighbor to Neighbor program aims to meet customers where they are to address their needs. While the locations are aimed at low-income customers with electric service, any customer is welcome to come to these events to explore solutions with UniSource employees.

“We are showing up where they are and bringing a suite of services,” said Erica Gutierrez, Customer Advocate. “It’s about building trust through real conversations and helping customers feel supported every step of the way.”

UniSource employees are visiting the Nogales area weekly and Mohave County locations on a quarterly basis.

At the events, UniSource can provide general information and register customers for programs, including Customer Assistance Residential Energy Support (CARES) that offers discounts on electric and gas bills. Employees can also connect customers with other agencies and resources.

CARES customers are eligible to receive free do-it-yourself weatherization kits with items to install at home to reduce electric use.

“Customers sometimes don’t know what programs we offer. We’ve also learned that some customers want help, but are reluctant to ask,” Gutierrez said. “When we are there, they are more open to it.”

UniSource began the pilot program, which it hopes to expand, in late 2025.

One location served is the Sahuarita Food Bank, which serves clients in Southern Arizona, including Santa Cruz County. Michele Estavillo, a Customer Advocate, said employees assumed the location would be saturated after a few months. But every time they go, they meet more customers who have questions.

In Nogales, UniSource has also made connections at Southeastern Arizona Community Action Program (SEACAP) and the Nogales Senior Center.

“The agencies are very excited to have us there. They want to provide wrap-around services so clients can get help in one place. It really fits well,” Estavillo said.
