The coronavirus pandemic has placed some families one step away from crisis.

With many businesses forced to lay off workers and close indefinitely, vulnerable individuals and families are now facing financial hardships as we try to limit the spread of the disease.

UniSource Energy Services customers have a way to help their neighbors in need.

Our Warm Spirit program invites customers to add a little to their monthly bill payment to help limited-income customers cover their energy costs. Thousands of customers have stepped up to help, providing local nonprofit groups with another way to support our communities.

Last year, customers who rounded up their gas or electric bills to the next dollar contributed nearly $40,000 to help those on limited incomes pay their bills.

Since the Warm Spirit program launched in 2011, customers have contributed more than $310,000. No contributions were used to administer the program, which means every penny contributed by customers goes to those who may need a little extra help to stay on top of their utility bills.

The Home Energy Assistance Fund administers the funding for the program, which also allows customers to make a charity pledge for a set dollar amount.

“It may seem like just a few pennies each month wouldn’t add up, but when it is multiplied by the number of neighbors who also want to help out, it can really make a big difference for families in need,” said Denise Richerson, Director of Customer Service and Programs.

“This program is built on the premise of neighbors helping neighbors and it is inspiring to see how the community has responded.”
