UniSource Energy Services celebrates the Weatherization Assistance Program’s 50th anniversary, highlighting no-cost home improvements that help qualifying customers save energy, reduce costs and improve comfort.

As the national Weatherization Assistance Program marks its 50th anniversary, UniSource is highlighting the impact of its efforts to improve energy efficiency in the homes of low-income residents.

Over the last 16 years, UniSource has helped 1,260 households make weatherization upgrades that have saved nearly 24,000 megawatt-hours – equivalent to the annual electric use of about 1,800 homes.

Nationwide, utilities have helped more than 7 million households reduce energy costs since 1976, according to the National Association for State Community Services Programs. The program’s milestone 50-year anniversary was recognized on Oct. 30, National Weatherization Day.

“We are honored to celebrate 50 years of the Weatherization Assistance Program and its remarkable legacy of serving communities,” said Nikole White, UniSource’s Senior Program Manager for Energy Services.

What is Weatherization?

Just like winter clothes keep people warm in cold weather, weatherization upgrades protect buildings from the elements. Our program provides a variety of ways to weatherproof homes, such as sealing leaks, adding insulation, and improving heating and cooling. The service is provided at no cost for qualifying low-income residents. As a result, customers can save energy and money while enjoying greater comfort at home.

UniSource provides funding for home retrofits that directly improve energy efficiency. HVAC system tune-ups or replacements are among the most common improvements.

Agencies rely on other funding sources that take care of other issues needed for comprehensive retrofits, such as roof repairs.

Local Partners

UniSource’s Weatherization Assistance Program operates in the Santa Cruz and Mohave County communities where we provide electric service. We deliver services in partnership with the Western Arizona Council of Governments (WACOG) in Mohave County and Southeastern Arizona Community Action Program (SEACAP) in Santa Cruz County.

Because the program has attracted strong interest, there may be a waitlist for services. We encourage customers to sign up so they can be considered as services become available.

“Weatherization plays a vital role in helping households reduce their energy burden while creating safer, healthier, and more comfortable homes. Programs like these strengthen communities by ensuring families can benefit from energy efficiency, affordability, and improved quality of life for generations to come,” White said.
