Golden Valley 230 kV

Increased electrical system reliability

UniSource Energy Services, is planning to build a new 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission line and substation in Mohave County near Kingman and the Golden Valley area. The Golden Valley 230kV Transmission Line Project will improve service reliability by replacing aging equipment and provide greater electric capacity to accommodate a projected 5-35 megawatt (MW) increase in peak energy demand over the next decade in the area.

The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) must give final approval for UNSE to construct and operate the project. UNSE filed an application for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility (CEC) in March 2021.

In June 2021, the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) approved UNSE’s application for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility (CEC) for the project. The project is estimated to be in-service in 2026. Please check back to the project webpage for updates.

In September 2021, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued a Decision Record and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) approving the preferred alternative identified in the Environmental Assessment.

National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Process

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), acting as lead federal agency, prepared an environmental assessment (EA) for the Golden Valley 230kV Transmission Line Project as required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

Six route alternatives were identified through an extensive public outreach process initiated in 2007 that included input from area residents, landowners, business owners and government agencies. The EA identifies Alternative E1 as the BLM’s preferred alternative.
